Invent an emergency and cancel them all. I prmise you I would do that. These people are not worth one morsel of your stuff. In fact tell the friend that started it to host the darn thing

Yeah, that's kind of a hard position to be in. Your husbands friend seems to lack knowledge in the ettiquite department. I would, as politely as possible, tell the friend that you planned a menu fit to feed only 6 people and not 11, and ask them to bring an extra side dish or two to help accommodate 11 people. If he is a good friend he would understand and have no problem with your request. If not, inform them that you will gladly have them over, but the extra guests are not welcome.

It would be no problem, I had expected 14 for Thanksgiving and ended up with 18, just pull up a few more chairs and place settings. I guess I would feel really bad if I knew someone was alone on a holiday.Having friends and family around during Christmas is actually the best part of the season for me.

That's easy. Don't spend all day cooking the Christmas dinner you had planned. Since your friends can't or won't help out, just have takeout food such as KFC or fix something really easy like sandwiches and the fixings.
