It really all depends on where in California you are going. The State is very long, and if you plan on visiting the Northern part of the State, I would suggest you see the Giant Sequoia trees, at the National Park. There are trees so larger that you could drive your car through them.
If the central part of the State is where you are heading, I would definitely see Yosemite National Park and San Francisco. Yosemite is a good day drive though, stopping at the various places for pictures. San Francisco would take a couple of days to visit Fisherman's Wharf and maybe Sausalito across the bay.
In the Southern part of the State you should visit the various beaches including Vienice Beach and Huntington Beach and Pier. Also Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm are great places to go.
Maybe getting even further South you should hit the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park. At the Wild Animal Park make sure you take the Wgasa monorail. True story about it. The Management wanted a African sounding name for the transport. Someone at the bottom of the memo put WGASA and the management like it. Thought it sounded African enough. What they did not realize is that it was a comment... initials for: Who Gives a Spit Anyway? (I cleaned that up a bit). They kept the name, and while they will admit this is where they got the idea, they tell kids publicly they it means Worlds Greatest Animal Show Anywhere! And it is!

You MUST see San Francisco. Especially if you're from a rural town or just, no, you have to see it. It's so indescribable and it's also very upbeat and a creative community. It's a must see. You should google some places that are possibilities, too.
Also here's information on San Francisco:

I went to California Orange County a few months ago.
We went to vienice beach in LA. I hated it there. It was full of bums asking for beer money.
I went to sea world. It was ok. More for 0-12 years old but it was cute.
You have to go to Laguna Beach. (but don't go in the moring it so cool there early in the morning go like from 12:00pm-whenever.) It really pretty there and so much fun on the beach.
I would of gone to Disney Land but my cousic who lives there had school. But I bet it would of been really fun there.

San Francisco for sure. Napa County is nice, it's considered Wine Country. Lake Tahoe is nice, but it's a DRIVE. And of course LA if you haven't already been. San Diego too.

Where in California?
Try hitting your local AAA office, they have travel books for the areas you're going and can tell you about different things to see and do.
