The refrigerator and microwave will not turn on now. No other appliances or outlets in my house are affected. The GFI outlet near the refrigerator does not respond. Resetting the kitchen circuit breakers has no impact. What is the problem and what do you recommend I do about it? I would try to fix it myself if possible. Thanks!

It's time to have that tumor removed.

from what you describe, I'd first replace the gfci receptacle. These should be tested monthly, but that seldom happens. Meanwhile, use an extension cord from a known live outlet to the units. If they are then operational, the gfci is probably defective. Replace it in a safe and workman like manner. Turn of the power to the units before working on the receptacle. Also it is possible that the neutral is open in the circuit, in which case the voltage to the appliances was twice what it should have been. Good luck. J.

You could have had a power surge, which cooked the controls, or a low-voltage event(abrown-out) in which when the voltage dropped , the appliances were damaged.

If it was a power surge, you may be entitled to compensation from the Power Co. The in herent design flaw in the system is that the high-voltage wires are above the low-voltage wires, and when the lines meet, a power-surge occurs.

Could be an open neutral, throwing overvoltage on some circuits. This is definitely a task for someone knowledgable in electricity.
