Think of by how many times the denominator [ in this sum 6, the bottom part of the fraction ] goes to get a number close to 17[ 6 x 2 = 12] .The number should not exceed 17 . Subtract 12 from 17 [17 - 12 = 5] . 5 is the numerator . The denominator remains the same [ 6] and two is the whole number [ 6x2=12]. So the answer is 2 5/6 .

converting a fraction to a mixed number..meaning with whole number.. you have to get how many of the denominator (number below) can you get from the numerator (number above)..
in this case 17/6.. how many 6 are there in 17.. and we say 2, which is equal to 12 (6 * 2).. then subtract it from 17, we have 5..
mixed fraction from the given here is 2 5/6

17/6
first you have to see how many times the denominator ( in this case 6) fits into the numerator(which is 17)
You see that 6 fits into 17 twice [6*2=12] {6*3 would equal 18 which is passing 17} so that number is you whole number [2]
Then the number remaining [in this case 5 is the numerator [ 5/]
SO your answer is 2 5/6 { the denominator is 6 because you keep the original denominator of the original fraction}
hope this is helpful

Divide the numerator (the top part) by the denominator (the bottom part), and the result (without the remainder) is the whole number that goes in front of the rest of the fraction. Subtract this number from the numerator, and you're done!
By the way, for this particular fraction the answer is 2 5/6.

See how many times 6 will go into 17 evenly. In this case that is 2. Then find how much is left over. 17-12 (which is 6 times 2) is 5. That is the leftover part. Thus, your answer is 2 5/6.
