You're totally right, Marijuana is MUCH less harmful than alcohol, which leads to the deaths of tens of thousands every year. Marijuana smoke is MUCH less harmful than ciggarette smoke, which is the number two preventable cause of death in the world. Yet anyone over 21 can buy alcohol and anyone older than 18 can buy ciggarettes.
All that aside, to answer your question, it depends. Factors include how much you have on you when you get caught, etc. Usually you'll get busted for posession, spend the night in jail, and have to pay a fine. Sometimes the courts will make you go to rehab. Punishments are much less lenient if you're a minor.
That having been said, a 21 year old friend of mine just got busted for posession and really didnt get get into any trouble. That was six weeks ago and here he is smoking pot again. So while the law may shake their finger at you the truth is you really wont get into trouble that will seriously inconvenience you as much as other drugs.
To the user above me: I read like 4 sentences into that retardedly long response and had to stop. "Users usually cut open a cigar and replace the tobacco with marijuana, usually combined with another drug like crack cocaine." Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. But clearly you pasted that, so whoever wrote that has no idea what THEY are talking about. I don't know anyone who smokes pot with crack cocaine.

There's a great documentary called "weed" that sheds a lot of light on why and how marijuana became illegal. a lot of it had to do with hemp and a lot of powerful companies not wanting to competition of a cheaply produced, safe, and durable material. And a lot of it had to do with creating another way to go after cultures that smoked marijuana, mainly Mexicans and black musicians. Every culture has it's drugs of choice. For white America, it's been alcohol and caffeine (and it should be noted that both these things are more dangerous than marijuana, and can result in a lethal overdoes, unlike marijuana). Demonizing other cultures and sub-cultures drug of choice has long been a technique employed for going after those cultures. It happened to the bohemians in France and other areas of Europe (absinthe) it happened to the Mexicans and blacks (marijuana) and it happened to the 60's counter culture (LSD). However, the fact that we continue to allow alcohol and cigarettes to be legal despite the numerous health problems and fatalities they cause every year should be proof that public safety doesn't have much to do with what drugs we choose to demonize and which one's we choose to accept.
How much trouble can you get into? It varies a lot, depending on where you are, and what the governments up to. In my state, we've had legal medical marijuana for sometime. However, the federal government, under the Bush administration, has started going after legal growers and users anyway, insisting that something can be legal on a state level, and you can still get in trouble with the federal government for it. My understanding is that in my state, if it's under a certain amount (i.e. not a "dealer" amount) then it's a slap on the wrist, just a fine. However, decades ago Texas was sentencing people to prison for years for marijuana use, and I have no idea if that is still the case in some places. I do know that the laws very considerably from one place to another, and the penalty seems to change quite frequently.

I love how people have to ridicule and make crappy comments when you simply ask a question, especially when they have absolutely NO idea as to what they're talking about. For those of you who chose to be an *** rather than offer a legit answer, why don't you USE COMMON SENSE and EDUCATE YOURSELVES by trying to find out the facts of something instead of believing all that you're told without looking further into it and in turn showing your obvious ignorance and that you can't think for yourselves.
Getting to the point; whats the problem? Everything's politics and nothing involves common sense or is for the true good of the people.
Most of the drugs that are illegal have a lot of health benefits and some are far more efficient in aiding with certain medical problems than the pharmaceuticals we have today.....but then where would the pharmaceutical company's profits come from? It's all about MONEY!
Plus, no one understands the principles of personal liberties anymore, so it's easier for us to lose our rights for activities we do in privacy that don't harm anyone but possibly ourselves.
And I think some of the answers you found in here from others proves this..
but to answer your question, check here and see. It'll tell you the penalties for certain amounts for each state. Just look at the box on the left on the website..

Good luck and be careful out there! Remember, you're an easier target for law enforcement, than say, murderers, rapists and child molesters and people of that nature, the real criminals..

You can get into a lot of trouble, and I think you mean FOR smoking pot. You don't get into trouble FROM the police. you get caught BY the police and the trouble is FROM illegal drug use. It is not the same as beer. Beer is legal for adults. Perhaps you should put down the blunt and pick up an English/grammar book instead.

Many people really want all drugs to be illegal, but alcohol was too popular for prohibition to really work. As a result, gangs made millions selling alcohol and basically ran several major cities. Now we have a more underground criminal network when it comes to drug traffic, but it's the same sort of thing.
Government should not have control of what adults do to their own bodies, only what they do that effects others. Just don't be stupid about where you smoke, and join a group that is trying to stop the war on drugs. Eventually reason will win out, but it will take a lot of effort.

Depending on how much you have, you can only get a warning. If you have more than the "allowed" amount, you can be fined for trafficking. If you are smoking marijuana in your car, you can have your license taken away and be charged with a DUI. Be careful. Under normal circumstances, there isnt much the police can do.

It depends on the State that you live in. The difference is that grass is illegal. Do you want a criminal record when you go to apply for a job?
It is not worth it. It is better to keep your head on straight. Try this for me, the next time you go to a party don't drink anything, or smoke, or take anything. Then just watch the other people and see how stupid they look when they get wasted. Just try it one time, then you'll know what you look like when you are in that same condition.
good luck.

smoking marijuana will get you in trouble (only if you get caught lol) although it kills brain cells if you do smoke than you should chew a lot of gum because chewing gum increases the amount of oxygen that enters your brain and helps create more red blood cells in your brain. i recommend finding natural highs like sky diving or climbing mountains because they dont involve making someone rich and you dont have to worry about getting beat down and sent to jail.
good luck, if push comes to shove move to jamaica and make some friends im sure they will be happy to introduce you to their experiments lol.
