i think after 5 or 6 years the law recognizes it as something.i'm not really sure.

Its called a Common Law Marriage but to be considered part of a common law marriage there are certain criteria. I think it varies between states. I know that in Texas a common law marriage carries just a much weight as if you had a civil ceremonial marriage. You might try to look on your states e-government site.

Sounds like you are talking about common-law marriage. But that only occurs in certain states, and under certain circumstances. You'd best consult an attorney.
