it depends on what team. For example Varsity team for high school then yes. because it helps with expirence and then in the future they will be able to play more. Also they will have a letter. However, getting benched on anything lower than that its probably more like a waste of time and money. Start a seperate team or just get playing time anywhere because its more important to play and lose, then it is to get benched and win. Also, getting playing time also helps kids get better. and no its not fair to the kid to be getting benched every game, so dont put them on the team.

It depends on the level of the team along with the kid's aspirations. As Tyrone stated, if this is varsity hockey, any level of college hockey or juniors, there are going to be some players who don't see much ice time. At any of the youth levels below what I mentioned, everyone should play. Mites through Midgets and JV hockey should be about teaching the kids and not much else, with the exception of the top level Midget programs.

There is something to be said for sitting on the bench. My freshman year of college, I rode the pine all year and was even scratched from the lineup at times. I busted my butt at practice, paid attention to what was going on during the games and improved dramatically. That first year gave the coach a chance to see what I was made of, how hard I was willing to work and that I really wanted to be on the team. It also gave me some time to develop emotionally and physically. It was the first level I reached where I was no longer the star and it was a rude awakening. My parents helped to keep my attitude in check because I felt I could perform better than some of the players who were seeing ice, my coach just had a different opinion.

The other factor is just how serious the kid is about hockey. If he believes he has a future beyond the level he is playing and the quality of coaching is that good then this may be worth it. If it is just a hobby and he is doing for fun and exercise then he should be someplace where he is going to see game time.

A parent can use this a life lesson. Kids are not going to get everything they want in their lives. The world has become so overly politically correct of late that many parents are over protective to the point of not allowing their kids to experience any hardship. There are going to be times in life when they are going to learn that they are just not good enough to get what they want regardless of how hard they work.

Depends on what level. I have been coaching little league and senior league for that last 10 years and to my knowledge, all leagues sanctioned by either Cal Ripken or Babe Ruth have rules regarding minimums that each player MUST play each game or the team will be penalized. In most rule books that I have read the general rule is 6 outs and 1 at bat minimum. If the player does not get those in a game, they must be made up in addition to at the next game. Otherwise the game can be protested by the other team.

It just gives them more motivation to work hard and get better. Don't be such a parent about it. My grandpa and dad are coaches and parents go down to them after games asking why didn't their son play? Well, the truth is that they suck and they never show effort. If they showed effort and the will to get better, the coach will find a way for them to get in the game. ALL COACHES hate when parents go up to them wondering why when the simple answer is that they don't play hard enough in practice. The coach doesn't see the player staying after and practicing on their game.

Here's a question for you... Why are you putting the kids on a team to begin with? Is it to have fun and play? Are they happy just being able to practice and never being able to play? Ask the kids what makes them happy. I personally don't agree with having a kid on a team and not playing them.

Yes. They learn the truth about life. You have to be the best to play but you have to have heart to stay on the bench
