Brother is a good sewing machine. I would NOT purchase one from a box store such as Costco, Walmart, etc. They do not service the machine or do warranty work if anything goes wrong.

Purchase a Brother from a dealer. Yes, they can be more expensive, but they are usually a better quality than the box stores...and will last longer. Plus, a dealer will support their own product and help you if you have questions. Stay away from bargain prices...anything around $100 is not worth the money.

From the experience I've had with Brother sewing machines, they aren't a very good brand. They tend to break easily, but to pay $90 a year may become expensive. Janome is a brand i've trusted, and i now own a 20 year old Pfaff (that's spelt correctly) and it works perfectly. My suggestions are to get a new machine, but without one of those digital screen that apparently break easily and are a hassle to use. a new Janome is a good machine at a good price, and a Pfaff will last a long time. you could try for a second hand machine to get one cheap, but you don't really know what's been done to it as their reason for selling, and it probably won't come with a warranty.

I have not been pleased with any Brother machine I've tried, nor with Singer post about 1965. I'd suggest you go to a real sewing machine dealer's (as opposed to places that have a stack of machines in boxes) and try some other brands and types. Three years of fixing your Singer = cost of a pretty good Janome. (Janome seems to have the corner on "relatively cheap and reliable" now on the lower end of the market ($200-400), but there are other good brands out there.) FWIW, I like the way Vikings sew, but your preferences might be for another brand.
Good stuff here on choosing sewing machines:

Singer is no longer a big name in sewing machines. In fact, it has pretty well dropped to near bottom of the list. The cream of the crop is Bernina and you pay dearly for every ounce of it. The models sold at discount stores are bottom of the product line and you may not be happy with either brand. Always check a store's return policy. You may be able to purchase, try and then return if you do not like the way the machine handles the job. The best option is to visit a few sewing machine dealers and tell them what you are looking for in a sewing machine. They will help you select a machine that will fit your budget. . Like car dealers, they will let you test drive the machines before purchasing. After purchasing, the staff at a sewing machine dealer will help you if you have a question or need assistance For quilting you want as much space as possible between the tower and presser foot to accommodate the bulk of a quilt. You want to include a quarter inch foot for piecing and a walking foot as well as a daring/quilting foot for free motion quilting. When doing free-motion stitching, you and not the machine will be controlling the motion of the fabric. If the machine you like does not have a feature to lower the feed dogs for free motion stitching, you can set the stitch length to zero to stop the feed dogs from moving.

something you need to keep in mind is every machine should be serviced. brother is a good brand, i have an embroidery machine and love it. many years ago i did buy a cheap brother machine and i did manage to wear it out. the last i checked sears Kenmore is now made by janome. they have some fantastic sales. if you are wanting a new sewing machine i would go for the janome. the stitch quality is excellent for the cost of the machine.

just remember to have fun.

I'd suggest getting yourself a sewing machine repair manual.

The first time I was expected to spend $20 for a tune-up was the time I spent $10 for a manual and the machine still runs fine. The prices for manuals has risen, but so has the cost for repairs.

It's sad that a new machine is about the same price as a tune-up, but I always go for the tune up.
