I know that we have it pretty good here in America, and many think that people should follow suit with our version of democracy in other parts of the world. But is it our decision to make? And aren't there other ways of encouraging human rights and free elections without using military action?

Didn't you know.. might makes right now?

And are the elections in America really free when in the last two elections there was serious concerns that the elections were rigged due to the voting machines? Bush-Gore, Bush-Kerry?

The election machine people said there would be victory to Bush.

Perhaps Americans should make a new Appian way littered with the crucification of dissenters like the Roman's did. Are we that far off from doing it?

That will put the fear of G.d or at least the fear of something into them.

As you might surmise, I do not think that America should Impose much of anything onto others .. but it does.

Well I live in the UK and I don't think you have it pretty good in the USA. I would hate to live with your health care system or live with your crime rate. I would fear living in a country where everyone carries a gun, where there is a death penalty and so much corruption. I would fear for my kids future in a divided nation with extremes of poverty. I wouldn't like living in a country with poor access to good food and mass obesity and no way to walk anywhere. I would also worry about the sustainability of current lifestyles and the consumption of oil and commodities.

For the record the UK is also not perfect, I don't like it raining so much or the binge drinking and yob culture which spoils our towns, but much of what hurts the UK has been imported from the USA. Fast-food obesity, junk TV, violent Rap music, gun obsessed media and games, SUV's which fill the roads and parking spaces, macho culture in general have made England a worse place to live. Also the leadership of the USA on the middle east and Iraq have made us all insecure and on climate change you current leadership is bad. So no you don't have the right to impose your will on others and in even if you did your way of life is degrading the planet. By the way, 50 years ago your country acted very positively in the world but recently you have elected some dumb leaders...

If you observe in history, this is what empires do. The Romans did it. The British did it. And even the Imperial Japan did it! It is one of the ways which an empire exerts its influences on other domain, by imposing its own idealogy upon other nations.

After World War II, we thought we have worked out a mechanism called United Nation. But it has becoming more evident that this mechanism has failed to meet its expectation.

I do not believe our country (The United States of America) should impose our way of life on any nation. However, I do believe that EVERY nation in the world should be governed by a democratic process, where the people of that nation are able to elect their leaders, and not have to live in dictatorships. Everyone should have a say in their government.
We in the USA do not have it perfect; We have leaders who are in their positions for financial gain only; and yes, we are the idiots who elected them into office.
I would hope and wish that every nation could have an honest, democratic government, where the people truly do rule.

No one should impose a way of life on any one. No one should use terrorism on anyone. No one should have used poison gas on their fellow men. Eventually, we will be at peace again and we know who our enemies are outside the country and in. Democracy must be pretty good to haveall the illegals wanting to reside here. They sure as hell are not heading for South America!

i agree, not every country can take on a democracy at the moment and that doesnt mean that they are "third world" countries or whatever, just because someone or something doesn't adhere to our way of life we deem them below us. This idea falls upon our currenet situation, who are the terrorists, the numerous people being killed by the a foreign military, that being the US who only try defending their home.

If all the country become as one and ruled by one centralized government by adult franchise Us could be a pat in ruling the world and sharing the ways of all will be the best way .Imposing on others by self styled police man is not very ethical .

Laguna8 you are unto something. However it is a mistake to think we go into these countries to impose democracy and our "way of life".There is a reason why we are so hate in some countries though loved in others. For centuries our gov.with help of the cia has imposed dictatorships around the world.Gov.that torture and murder their own people at will. When we leave countries alone most find a beautiful way to democracy.Ghana,South Africa, Venezuela,Chile,Hungaria are all developing their own forms of democracy without us.

America sees herself as the police of the world. However, the world doesn't seem to want it. America is good to give internationally as well, but I think she needs to focus more on domestic issues--for example--healthcare. America just gave 250 million dollars to Jordan, at the same time the housing market is at an all time low and could have used that boost.
