that all depends on your car. the owners manuals usually tells you. I have seen cars have as much as 6 gallons left and as little as 2.

Depends on the vehicle and how you drive it. Each vehicle has fuel level the light goes on at. The position of the vehicle can determine when the sensor gets set off. Each vehicle has a different amount of miles per gallon it generally gets, this rate is determined by where and how you are driving. Stop and go traffic or highway makes a difference. It can also vary based on how fast you drive, even if you are on the highway if you are driving 100 mph you will burn more fuel than if you are driving 65.
Basically there are way too many variables to determine how many additional miles you can make it after your fuel light goes on. I would recommend refueling within 15-20 miles to be on the safe side, especially if you drive an SUV.

Depends on the car. In my Cavalier the light comes on when I have about 2 gallons left, (approximately 60 miles).
Fill your tank, drive until the light comes on, then fill up again. Take note of the number of gallons you put in the second time. In your owners manual it should tell you the gas tank capacity, (usually under "Specifications"). Compare the two numbers.

This question was asked on ABC tv news program this past week. On an Mini van they test it was 60 miles.
So this week I tried my own test. My Civic has 11 gallon tank. I drove it till the the light came on. I filled it to the max and I got 9.1 gallons. So I still had about 2 gallons.
I can get about 25 to 30 MPG easily. So that's about 50 to 60 miles AFTER the light comes on.
So it seems like my car and the minivan on TV has about the same range. Maybe all cars have about 60 miles of range after the light comes on. Hmmmm...
Good Luck

Until the car goes chug, chug pop and leaves you sitting dead in the water in an intersection. It means, "Get to the gas station, Post Haste".
