It was part of the Soviet Union and was called Byelorussia in those days.
It was one of the first areas of the Soviet Union to be invaded by the Germans and suffered very heavily from reprisals against partisan activity.
The Germans would wipe out whole villages including the entire population for the death of one German soldier.
This happened hundreds of times.
