Because his anti-war views appeal to America's anti-war majority?

So why would anyone doubt that this will lead to electoral success in a Democracy?

Ignorance just like the media down plays him. Everyone bashes the guy because he supports the constitution which is sad because that's how this country was supposed to work. We don't bash the founding fathers are irrational and radical so why the hell do people bash him. Simple ignorance to collect their welfare, social security, personal interest for themselves and not the good of the country.

His other views do not coincide with the majority of the populace, so he will not win an election.

Specifically, as a social liberal, he stands no chance of winning the GOP primaries.

Indeed. Observe how they are now calling him a "spoiler" now in Yahoo News rather than a "long-shot candidate". It's gradually getting more positive.

Yes he is. His message of small government is enticing. However, his inability to see the big picture in Iraq is a fatal flaw.
