It tells them you didn't try very hard in school, frankly. Best thing to do would be to start at a good junior college and transfer to a better school after two years.

i had a terrible gpa, bottom half of the class, but high SAT scores, 2110 composite, 800 iic, 800 chem

yes, i didnt really try in high school, but i am fairly bright and got into a really good university. but to make up for a 2.4, id say you need a 2300 on the SAT to even have a chance at a top 50 school

That either you are good at standarized tests, got lucky, or are smart but don't bother applying yourself. None of which are useful for colleges. Try attending a community college first, applying yourself this time, and transferring.
