am a junior at a private Catholic high school. As I stand, my GPA is at 3.765 with a rank of 39 out of 115. I haven't taken the SAT yet but I'm looking to make anything from 1750-2000. I take 2 or 3 AP classes per year and the rest of my courses are advanced. I am involved in around 5 extra-curriculars including newspaper editor, student council secretary, and my school's student recruiting club. I am also very involved in my church (Catholic) and am the director for a teen retreat. I am a first generation African-American college student. I am looking for a medium to large school in Texas or Virginia with a reputation for academic excellence and one that supports a well-rounded student. Also, I'd like to think of some top tier schools that I could apply to with my qualifications (These schools need not be in Texas or Virginia. I am looking to major in liberal arts, political science, communications or law.
I appreciate your suggestions and thank you very much.

Of course the obvious ones are UVA, UTA (are you a resident of Texas?) and Rice. William & Mary might be too small for you. I would apply to the three, plus possibly UNC Chapel Hill (a wonderful school). I would definitely go for Yale as a top-tier school (just seems like a fit for you) and Boston University.

I graduated from the College of William & Mary in Willliamsburg, VA. It may be too small for you, approx. 6000 undergraduates, but it's a great school. The thing that I really liked about it is that it requires its students to be well rounded. The area is great, but it is a small town, so some people do not like it. Many of my classmates had attended other VA universities and ended up transferring to William & Mary because the 70K of VA Tech or UVA was too much for them.

You don't say what major you might be interested in, so that will probably influence your decision a great deal too.

Good luck in your applications!

Have you checked into TCU? I'm not sure what all they offer there. My sister-n-law attends school there, but we have never discussed what all they offer.
