Most of the time,no danger at all.
But sometimes with repetitious behavior, you start to lose yourself.

well if your talking, what is the danger in me making my own choices, Nothing. I am a Strong believer in trial and error. Mistakes as a person are what make up some of our personality and who become. If you do not allow a person to make mistakes they will never learn. Most of us know that as a person, when someone says, "DON'T do that" we are going to want to do it.
If it is illegal, well, depends on if you know the risks and consequences. I'm not giving permission for someone to go out and murder their worst enemy by any means. If a 15 year old wants to smoke, they know the pros and cons and still are adamant about wanting to do it, You don't have to agree with it but they are not going to learn unless they deal hands on with the consequences. It isn't a matter of being an irresponsible parent. Sometimes you can talk to your child until they are blue in the face. You can even send them to placement for being op-positionally defiant--it happened to me and I still found a way to smoke cigarettes.
Teach your kids right from wrong but you cannot hold your child's hand for the rest of their life--they need to learn the error of their ways. If the parent gets a fine, make the child work and collect his or her paycheck until the fine is paid.

What's the difference between going your own way and going someone else's way?
The benefits/risks can be equal, the difference is, when you make the choices, you live with the results better than you might if someone else chose your path.

Humans are so willy nilly at times. If we went our own way all the time, just imagine all the trouble we would get into. And not always legal trouble. Just personal, heartbreaking trouble. We all know right from wrong, it's a matter of choice and most times we make the wrong one.

When I go my own way it means I'm being myself, rejection is the only on danger you'd face but, it's OK.

Being wrong, of course. Being embarrassed. Looking like a fool. Being the punchline in someone's joke around a beer.
The alternative is unacceptable, though.
