There's a simple way to find the furthest point on earth from any place. You simply need the latitude and longitude. In your case, Midland, MI is at 43°37'N, 84°15'W.

Simply reverse the hemisphere of the latitude and leave the number alone. In your case, 43°37'S. Subtract the longitude from 180 and reverse the hemisphere. In your case, this is 95°45'E.

Like the rest of the continental US, this is a point in the Indian Ocean. The nearest land to this point is part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, a small, uninhabited island called Île Saint-Paul, about 900 miles WNW.

If you know your latitude and longitude, the easiest way is to look up the antipode (opposite side of the globe) on a map.

To get the coordinates of the antipode, just change the latitude from north to south. If you are at 40 degrees N, the antipode is at 40 S.

The longitude is 180 degrees minus your longitude and then change the sign. Remember when you're subtracting that you have to use the same system as when subtracting times. In other words, don't borrow units of 10; borrow units of 60. Then change the direction from west longitude to east longitude.

Look up the location on a map, and there you are.

The other side of the earth for all of the continental US is in the Indian Ocean. There are very few places that have opposites on land. Spain-New Zealand is one.
