Well, you should not go to the store and have the sales girls model it for you - that will make you look like a perv to them and also to your wife should she go in there to exchange something - and they tell her about it.
You can just walk into the store and ask them what is popular this season. Have the size ready and just buy what they point out to you.
You should not go wrong with a classic teddy. It's when you get into the whole garter thing that starts to get uncomfortable when you buy it.
Also, whatever you do, be sure it is something your wife is comfortable wearing. Nothing will kill the sentiment and mood more than for you to buy her something you want her to wear - that is something she is uncomfortable wearing. She may feel pressured. This will cause all sorts of underlying issues you want to avoid.
Women tend to be self-conscious about their bodies and you do not want her thinking that you are tired of her, or are looking at other women, etc.
This can be a fun gift, BUT it can also open all sorts of cans of worms you can't even imagine.
So, keep it simple and classic and not too risque - she will buy the crazy stuff if she wants to....

I would just ask the sales people for help. If you know your wife's size and what she generally likes, a helpful sales person is usually more than willing to point you in the direction of a nice gift for her. Don't worry about looking like a pervert, men buy lingere for their wives or girlfriends all the time its not a big deal at all. I used to work at victoria's secret and I was more than happy to help people find gifts, men or women it wasn't weird to me or my co workers at all. Just ask for help, have an idea of what your wife would like, don't forget the gift reciept and you'll be able to pick out a lovely gift.

Go to your wife's underwear drawer, and pull out some lingerie you have seen her wear.
Get Victoria's Secret if that is where you are shopping. Then you will be sure it fits.
A friend of mine's boyfriend described her bust to a salesperson as "fried eggs with the yolks broken"! It fit.
My husband held up his hands, and that nightie fit too.

you should not think about how the others would think...
what you should think of is how you'll make your wife happy
and let her feel she's special. i suggest you come up to the
clerk and seriously ask for a suitable lingerie for your wife...
Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

Often men shop for lingerie for their wife. I would check her bra/panty sizes in her drawer so you get the right size. However, I would consider something other than lingerie. It can inadvertently make a woman feel unsexy if it doesn't fit right or if it makes them feel cheap.

just walk around the store, and when you see a female pick up an item, sneak up behind her and say, "oooh that looks interesting but it's too large for my wife, have they got smaller sizes"
