ok im a harry potter fanatic, but i still found a teeny flaw. anyone else notice it/have an answer for it?
the book (OOTP) clearly says that those who have seen death can see thestrals. harry isn't able to see thestrals till 5th year, after he had watched cedric die. but he should've been able to see them since first year, because as we know (and as is elaborated in book 7), harry witnessed the deaths of his parents (and quirrel i guess?)
?!

Harry did not directly see his mother's death. He could hear it, but he was lying on his back looking at the ceiling and only saw the flash of green light.

And when Quirrel was killed by Voldemort, Harry was unconscious.

A person both has to witness death and let it sink in that someone is gone. Harry's view was largely obstructed by his crib when his mother was killed (remember Harry was upstairs when Voldemort killed his father so he couldn't see his death) and as a baby he did not understand that his mother was dead. By the time he could understand and accept their deaths, he didn't really remember it beyond it seeming like a dream. Even when Lupin was teaching him the Patronus charm, Harry could only really remember hearing his mother die, not actually seeing it. As for Quirrel, Harry was unconcious when Quirrel actually died. The last thing he'd remember of Quirrel was both the immense pain he felt from touching Quirrel to prevent him from getting the stone for Voldemort and the immense pain Quirrel was in.

well, harry was only one when his parents were killed, so he wasn't really able to understand the impact of it. i think it only works if the death has an impact on the person (cedric was the first of many).

true. but maybe you have to be aware of the fact that the people are dying. Harry Potter was a baby.

Yeah, i spotted that one too. i think it's just a blooper between books. sometimes it's difficult to keep all the details straight.
