We have two things here. The Wall the movie and The Wall the album. First came the album, which was mostly written by Roger Waters. It was his concept first and from the things I've read it is a mix of Roger's life, the band experience, and thoughts about Syd. But again, the prevailing theme is alienation, as in Wish You Were Here and Animals. Roger was the concept album machine. Which David and the rest of the band weren't so thilled about.
If you discuss The Wall the movie, it is not a favorite of Roger's. This was a project by Alan Parker, the director. Roger tried to be a part, but Alan wanted very little input from Roger. Accordingly, this is a Alan Parker film based on the story he extracted from The Wall album.
I like both of them myself. I first hear the album in the 1980s when I was a teenager, and saw the movie around the same time. For years before I heard other wise I thought the movie was about some guy who went crazy from the band Pink Floyd. I met lots of people with different takes on the issue. It is a testament to the power of the story tellers that it can cause so much energy.
Cheers

It's about as close to a perfect movie as I've ever seen. (And I own more than 2000 DVDs) The album is already amazing, but you add Alan Parkers direction and Gerald Scarfes animated sequences to it and you've really got something awesome.
I just wish the Floyd reunion from Live Aide would have sparked a longer collaboration between Rogers and Gilmour again. Damn it all.

It was ok, but I also think that the best album from Pink Floyd is Wish You Were Here. Now that's music you just don't hear today.

I like pink floyd, but the wall was overly pretentious.I think I was turned off by it,because every pink floyd fan who watched it would tell me I had to do acid to understand it or their music.I always thought if I had to do acid to understand a movie or like someones music, neither one must be very good to start with.
I've always enjoyed listening to david gilmour play.

They are my favorite band!
As for The Wall... are you talking about the movie or the album? I love the album; the movie freaks me out.
