Certainly it is George Washington. As has been stated, Lincoln was the 16th president. However, it could be an interesting question.

Yes, Washington was the first president under the ratified Constitution of the United States. Although Lincoln was the 16th president and as such ran the Union through the Civil War. In a different perspective Lincoln could be considered the first president of a new country. A country that through right of conquest a new version of the Constitution was developed. That is, prior to the Civil War the Bill of Rights applied restrictions only to the federal government. After the Civil War the Bill of Rights also was applied to the States.

This resulted from the winning of the war and, the application of the 14th Amendment [1868] and, was justified by the case of Texas v White [1869]. In effect a new Constitution was in use and from that a case could be made that there was a new country.

Dear,

I have read your Question.

I think you're an American. Every American "MUST" know their First President.

If I may say, your question led you to foolishness and stupidity. Members look down upon you. Look what the members have had said on you. It's my duty as a Member of Yahoo Answers to advice you. This is a very sincere advice from me.

Every American knows George Washington is the First President. Look at your money (Dollar Bill). Every money having the portrait of George Washington. That means George Washington is the "First" president of The United State of America.

Anyway, due to the many changes made by Abraham Lincoln to improve America, and love by the Americans you may thought Lincoln is the First President. Lincoln is the 16th President of The United State of America.

With due respect to you, I am a Malaysian.

Washington had to start from scratch of knowing what all a President's duties were and how to write legisltion and picking upstanding citizens to help start a presidential cabinet and how long a term should be. There was just so much more to get it all started, than when Lincoln became president after 15 others had been president and 72 years later. So, I'd say Washington, considering.

Washington was our first president. He started the two term limit trend and was also the leader of the army during the Revoluntary War.

Lincoln was not in fact our 11th presidant but our 16th. He was the presidant of the Union during the civil war.

Ok are you a complete idiot or are you joking.George Whashington was our first president. Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president and in no way could ever be considerd our 1st preident even considering the civil war as a new begining. Because Lincoln never considered what we now call our civil war a "civil war". Lincoln always considred himself president of the whole country and the war only as a small rebellion that curropted good country men.
