i am from va, but i was just recently charged with a misdemeanor with attempt to commit battery in wva. i did not hit the person. i took a plea bargain bc i was scared and i didnt know the law very well in that state. and the lawyer that i had, seem like he did not know what was going on himself. i am currently in college. and i was wondering will this misdemeanor charge prevert me from getting a job after i graduate college bc i was looking to get master in social work or go to law school?

i didnt attack anyone. it was a prank where i put itching powder in their body wash. i have learned from my mistake. i never thought of all the things that could have happen to them. but nothing happened to the person, bc they didnt even use it, but someone told them what i did. and that is how the charge came about.

Misdemeanors are light offenses and could be disregarded by the employers if the applicant is qualified.

In most job applications you are often asked about "felonies" not "misdemeanors" . Now increasingly - depending on the job - you might have to have a background check - your misdemeanor will likely show up with this. It may raise questions - so you should keep some record of the actual incident - but in general it will not keep you out of most social work positions. A misdemeanor can keep you out of school.

You will be going up against other applicants, many of whom do not have a criminal record.
Having a misdemeanor on your record will not prevent you from finding a job, but it ain't going to help!

If you attack somebody, it's still considered assault regardless if you actually succeed in striking him. You *attempted* to harm him, and it's only circumstance and luck that prevented you from doing so. Having such a conviction on your record can prevent you from getting a job, but that's entirely up to the discretion of the employer. You're just going to have to be honest about it on any job application you fill out and hope he is willing to consider your explanation, convince him that you've changed for the better, and that he'll overlook the matter.

A "guilty" disposition on your criminal record for even misd. battery could haunt you in that kind of work field (not so much in some others) The best thing to do is be honest about it on your applications. A lot will depend on who is wanting to hire you. Good Luck.

Yes it can. Employers do background checks to weed out thieves and/or potential problems so yes this can effect future jobs.
