Does this refer to the Italians in Italy or the Italians who emigrated to America in the 1900s? For those who lived in Italy, there were the land owners who had high status, the artisans who were sought after as craftsmen, and the workers or laborers who had the lowest standing. The overall controller was the church. These were the most powerful which led to thousands emigrating to America to flee religious oppression. This was especially true of those in the north of Italy.
