I take violin lessons, but recently bought a cheap ($124) 17.5 inch viola on eBay to play around with. Now, though, I find the only cheap cases are too small. The only one I found that will accomodate a 17.5 inch viola costs $189 plus shipping. Anyone know where I can do better? Thanks!!

Not at all being totally certain of at least two different measurements in the two instruments you mention, I have a notion.

I want to assume that in your statement CHEAP, that you still want the viola to be a viable instrument.

WITH the measurements of each different instrument, is it possible that a Viola would fit into a Violin case, OR one that you can modify?

I would check Music stores, School music depts., Your local Symphony Orchestra, Goodwill, Salvation Army, thrift stores, for USED, and if successful, either find a Viola case, or a Violin case you can modify.

Just my two cents

Are you sure it's 17 1/2 and not 16 1/2 ...?? That's a HUGE viola and very unusual.

I looked around for you at a half dozen places and couldn't fine a viola case that size, at any price. You may have to get an "adjustable" but not buy it online; you will need to take the viola with you and try to see if it will fit.

Or better yet, get rid of the monster and buy a 16", which is much more reasonable.
