In an overall general sense yes. The help people give to their fellow human being is usually overshadowed by the material aspects of the age we live in.
Personally, at least how it applies to myself, I feel that the older I get, the less materialistic I get. A 20 yr old in retrospect isn't really that mature and is more geared towards what they can physically obtain in life. Now, 18 yrs later, I realize that anything material outside of a few irreplaceable family heirlooms can be replaced, people matter much more.

Seems like it's getting worse!
And the one sad fact many don't notice is that it's partly due to the fact people are busy with this " I have it worse than you" thing going on!
One time I was telling this guy I know things I was going through, recent stuff. Adult stuff. Then he's like "Oh, you're going to feel sorry for yourself?" then talks about his childhood, and be like "If you think you got problems, go to Africa". He does not do that with his friends, but he does that with me. ALWAYS there for his friends, but don't want to hear what I have to say about my life. Then, one time I got fed up with this talk and made it backfire. I said to him " I bet you don't think about people in Africa when you have problems!" or something of that nature. He told me " F U"
Let's just face it: We ALL have problems sometimes, I don't care about your economic situation, what happened to you as a child or adult, what you have and what you lack. We ALL have something to deal with sometime.
Let's take a look at the widow in the New Testament. Do you think she was worried about her problems when she shelled out the two coins she had? Sure, some wealthy guy put in lots of coins, but Jesus was more impressed with the widow because she gave what little she had, and the guy gave out of his wealth.
Yes, there are times when you TRULY cannot drop everything to help another person, such as, if you got someone in the emergency room, or your attending a funeral, or something like that, but the world needs to know, deciding you have it worse than someone does not make your problems go away. It does not mean that other person is without problems. It may make them grateful it's not as bad, but they still need their problem solved.
"Me first" and "What is in it for me" does not get you far at all. It just makes people not want to have respect for you. And it makes you lose out in the end. I mean, you cannot tend to EVERY SINGLE need of the earth, but we should do what we honestly and truly can. The rewards are worth it, the joy of knowing we're the reason that person is in a better place, or that person got the help they need.
All we need in this earth is love and sensitivity. We were put here on earth to help others, not be in it fo ourselves.
As for failed relationships, there's such a power struggle. The key? 50/50 and not one person ruling over the other. Compromise. Respect. Let the other person have what they want sometimes. And don't do what you don't want the other person to do. And if you have no intentions to be with someone in the long run, do make that known up front so things don't go beyond first meeting. Life short.
I didn't make you fall asleep, did I Sumper. Sumper? Suuuuuumper! Waaaake uuuuuuup! ( me kidding!)

No.
I can name of many eras in past history in which greed and selfishness were far more prevalent in civilization than today.
We as humans are selfish by nature, whether people choose to acknowledge it or not. Even by acting altruistically, we are still searching to satisfy our egos. Such gain does not always have to be purely material.

Yes, and I believe the commercials on television have contributed significantly to these kinds of attitudes. Satan is a deceiver and will use any means to spread his lies, even what comes through the air waves. God bless you!!!

it really seems like it for the most part, and it also seems as though it's just getting worse. people are bringing their kids up this way. but every once in awhile, i see someone act with total kindness and love and respect for another fellow human being, and i realize that not all is lost yet, and jesus is still here with his people.

Hmmm....I think the Bible says "forsaking all others before thy Mother/Father, husband /wife....(I'm no expert!) but it's touch and go here....If "YOU" are the person NEGLECTING yourself, then by all means it's "Me first". BUT: If you are at peace with yourself/humanity/spirituality then I think it's time to reach out to others and share whatever you can....

I do not know if it is a characteristic of our generation or just a natural result of mankind moving farther and farther away from God.
But I do know that the farther away from him we get then the more control Satan has over us.
