The next US President is going to have one helluva job putting out fires and handling thorny issues, that is a given. (The full extent of Bush's bungling is yet to show its ugly face, that's also a given.)
The third 'given' is that the world will not be satisfied if there is not a major change the US behaviour towards it and also a change of attitude on vital issues such as the environment, world poverty and business ethics. (Gore and Bill Clinton are ridiculed only in the US, and the subprime housing fiasco was spawned by American greed and dishonesty.)
The US is fast becoming irrelevant on the world stage.

Question: Which candidate is going to be able to lead the US back to being taken seriously and respected throughout the world again?

For those of you about to attack me for being un-patriotic, you are damn right.
Wearing a flag on your lapel or repeating the oath of allegiance like a mantra is not going to cure the cancer.
Serious chemotheraphy, etc is called for.

That's the biggest given of them all.

Anyway, I am not an American; I live in Colombia, and because I am blonde and blue eyed, people here immediately assume I am one.
I used to be amused when this happened, but now I quickly correct them.
We (my look-alikes and I) are miles apart in our concepts of what is right and decent.

Back to my question:
I reckon Hillary or Obama on the Democrat side and McCain on the GOP side. I think McCain will eventually become a cranky, slightly senile old cuss, so he disqualifies himself.
Hillary Clinton, with the added bonus of another Clinton to advise her, seems to be the logical choice. Obama can get some experience serving in Hillary’s Cabinet, and then he can have his shot at the title.

Opinions?

(And for those ready to tear me apart for daring to criticise you, or ‘interfering in your affairs’, don’t bother, my skin is thick when it comes to silliness.)

i am looking for gore to be urged to enter the race. i think he has the wisdom and respect in the world community to lead this country.

clinton and the her irrelevant husband are opportunists in my mind.

i appreciate your perspective of seeing the united states for what it really is. your comment on the pledge of allegiance is too real.

thank you for the astute question and comments.

Obama is the candidate for change. Because change is the only thing that will help in these times.
