You know, there's an alternate answer to this question. Yes it works if you start at the North Pole. It also works if you start 57.96 meters from the South Pole.
Walk 50 meters south, then 50 meters east (since you're now 7.96 meters from the pole, this would be a circle with a circumference of 50 meters), then 50 meters north ... back where you started!
And you wouldn't see any bears at all at the South Pole. Penguins maybe.
