A last name is a "surname" (not "sir" name) , and I believe the previous poster was correct; it's "Smith".

My dad had a friend who was a member of the "Jim Smith Society" -- made up entirely of guys named Jim Smith. Yes, it's a real organization.

reason Smith is the most common... it just means -maker of things.

and can refer to blacksmith, or leathersmith, many manufacturing professions.
