And that other dude had to buy a whole new tv to enjoy his movies, which means he really doesnt like widescreen either....
So why do they make so many movies in widescreen?

I choose Wide Screen so then the whole frame is preserved and nothing gets cut out.
Try taping over the black bars portions on your screen with colored paper strips of your choice and you don't have to see the black bars.

Wide screen is the best. You get to see the whole movie and not just what they want to show with the full screen. Granted when I had my 27 inch the wide screen with the black bars at the top and bottom left a picture that was too small to see really well. I did not like it.
You have to get the right equipment. I now have a Samsung 52" DLP HD TV with a DVI, Digital Video Interface, input. I spent a bunch of money on a Samsung DVD player that has DVI output. The DVD player converts any DVD I play to DVI so everything is in HD. Wide screen movies fill my screen. I turn off all the lights and crank the sound up on my surround sound system. It is like being in a movie theater but with all the comforts of home.

You like pan & scan? I don't because it looks cheap. I assume you have a more or less square TV and not a widescreen TV. Have you even looked at them in the store? When you go to the movie theatre do you complain because the movie is in widescreen? Some people just don't understand what they are missing. I guess that's why they still make movies in so called full screen. It's like trying to exolain to someone who likes eight track tapes why CDs are better.I hope you figure it out because more people a waking up to the fact that WS is superior to the other.
Ok so you don't like widescreen because you say half your picture is gone. On my widesrceen tv your full screen leaves black bars on the side. So on a pan & scan movie I lose as much or more of the screen as you do. Futhermore when they make a movie into a pan & scan movie from a widescreen you loose detail. You don't have the picture clarity because you are taking a section of the WS movie and expanding it to fill a box shape.I stand by what said previously. If you don't like widescreen you are definitely not going to like blu-ray or HD. I have both of those but the difference between that and regular dvds would be lost on you anyway so don't bother getting either.
This is my final word on this. I'm not going to waste more of time on this arguing with you on this. Go to Circuit City or Best Buy talk to the people who make a living explaining this to people. Get an education.

Widescreen definitely.
Get over the black bars. You get to see the entire frame as it was originally shot.
Why would you only want to look at 66% of the film, cause that's what you're seeing when you cut off the edges to make the fullscreen version.

Widescreen.I'd rather see the movie the way it was filmed by the director. besides with "full screen" you lose of 50% or more of the picture, characters, special effects etc. Also widescreen is now becoming more and more mainstream with ads and TV shows. It's not just movies anymore.
Fullscreen is a joke as you lose a lot of the picture. It's been modified from it's original version(typically your movie theater widescreen).

Wide
Yeah the black bars suck, but with the wide screen format you see the movie as it was intended.
For me, the extra details, in some cases seeing two charactors inconversation & seeing the facial reactions simitaneously (with out the cut shots back & forth) adds so much to the to the experience that I'll put up with the black bars.

I'm so glad you asked this. I can't stand wide screen, yeah it's wider, but you lose like 3 inches on the top and bottom of the tv. Whenever i rent a movie, i hate it when it's only in wide screen.
