don't ship the item till the cheque clears at the bank and stipulate that on your sales of items. Otherwise don't accept personal cheques only accept bank cheques, a lot safer, or credit cards. If you get caught out Ebay run a tight ship anyway, they will chase things up for you

Just because the check "cleared" doesn't mean the money was there. You get a provisional credit for the check. Like $100 the first day , another $100 the next day, then the rest, but it can take a week or two, or more for the bank to actually find out if the funds were ever available to begin with. You could try money orders, bank checks, or even Western Union.

Well I believe you have the option of accepting money orders and cashiers checks also, don't you?
That's not to say that they can't be fake also. But you can keep the check in the bank until you are absolutely sure it clears. With most checks these days, that's within a week. But there is nothing that says that you can't keep the check for longer than that to make sure it clears. Ask your bank what they think. They can give you a better idea.

not a good idea. for one thing a lot of people won't send you a check. I wouldn't. there are other vendors I can do business with who accept more sophisticated payment methods.

for another, as you said there's the risk of insufficient funds, bank fees for submitting and resubmitting a check until it clears. and you should definitely NOT SHIP the product until the payment transaction is complete -- this means $$ in the bank.

You ship the item as soon as the check has cleared. But try to sort out your PayPal account too. Get in touch with them. They helped me out loads when I moved house and changed e-mail addresses and completely forgot all of my sophistaicted passwords!

100%. Why can't you use Paypal? You seem to know it's the best way to go.
