My best friend is a terrific woman in Australia whom I've never met in person. She's a bit younger than I, has a great guy for a husband, three adult daughters, one of whom has a baby.

She and I met in a yahoo chatroom nearly eight years ago we went from the standard A/S/L to sharing everything. Took us a couple of years to voice, a couple more to cam up.

We don't see eye-to-eye on everything, but I think we've never taken the other for granted. She had some personal problems in the beginning- she had some self-image issues and their money was tight, so she tried to get a job. Her self image issues didn't get better when she didn't get a job immediately. I didn't get her a job, but I told her she'd find one. She did.

Later, when my marriage failed, she was on my side, telling me the standard "you're a great guy" stuff, convincingly enough to keep me from feeling like a failed human.

We plan to one day meet. That's the far-off, don't-know-when exactly kind of one day. She'll bring her husband and I'll bring anyone that's with me or I'll go alone. It's not about romantic, physical stuff, it's about getting a hug and looking her in the eye.

Races and cultures? Well, I'm a California geezer and she's an aussie wife. We have English in common, though not a lot more. But we seem to be in synch in a lot of ways.

Thanks for reading this. Have a great Christmas!!

One of my mates who was involved with politics with me years ago was my closest friend. He was loyal, had courage, intelligence, determination and would never ask you to do something he would not do. He was as a brother to me, and he was shot down fighting for his country.

Gortamor, the north of Ireland.

My husband is my closest friend. He understands me, he loves me, he shares every aspect of life with me. He is kind and caring, he helps me to become a better person and he has a great sense of humor!

I'm close to my best friend because she's always honest with me, even if i don't want to hear it. She is like that for my benefit. She has been like a true friend.

My neighbor is my closest friend. This is because I trust her, she's there for me, I'm there for her, I tell her everything and we've had many good times together.
