I need the right answer on if I'm ambidextrous or not. I know this is a stupid question to ask but I've thought about it for so long that now I need to know if it's true. Basically, I'm left handed when it comes to writing and have always been - I was never able to write with my right hand and most probably ever won't. I know the term "ambidextrous" is used for people who can, for example - multi-task by writing with both hands at the same time but the way I do stuff is different. I can't mult-task with both hands if I ever tried but even though I'm left handed in writing I can, since being a young age, use the right hand to use scissors, right hand using mouse and I'm also left handed in a lot of different ways. So, basically, I can use both my hands for various different stuff I do but can only write with the left hand. I know this is a stupid question to ask but I need the answer of a person who knows these things and if I should ever think of myself as an ambidextrous person...

Thanks for the answers everyone except a couple that were actually a little insulting but that doesn't bother me. So, I don't really care if I'm ambidextrous or not as it was only a quick question...

Ambidexterous means that you can perform tasks with either hand (ambi means both), generally your right & left are equal in ability. If you write only with your left hand, is it due to lack of practice with your right? If you can write, draw, throw, etc. equally w/either hand, you are ambidexterous. Writing w/both hands simultaneously is not considered multi-tasking nor ambidexterous. By definition, you are ambidextrous when you use either hand with the same ease for any task.

Yeah, I am pretty much ambidextrous also. I think part of it is that I am a lefty who grew up in a right handed society. About the only thing I can't do with my right hand is write too well and if I wanted to, a little practice would take care of that.

Sorry but you are not ambidextrous, you have to be able to do everything equally with both hands, including writing, to be ambidextrous. I busted up my right hand in a sports accident and had to use my left hand for everything. I could write, but it certainly was not as legible as when I used my right hand! I am also typing with both hands, but that does not make me ambidextrous!

I am basically right handed but can write left handed, I play pool left handed, Play badminton either handed, bat from either handed and pitch either handed, but still prefer right handed. My sister was going to be left handed and my father forced her to write right handed. To this day she is an executive with a Mortgage Co. and writes like a 6 year old. But she is a brilliant woman. So yes - if you use both hands equally well at tasks - then you can be considered ambidextrous.

The definition of ambidextrous is to be able to use both hands with equal ease. I eat left handed, write right handed, shoot guns left handed, gold and baseball right handed. I cannot perform any of these tasks as well with the opposide hand (even with practice). The term used for myself is "cross dominant"

It sounds as if your laterality between your right and left brain lobes are pretty much equal--and therefore, it would seem to be ambidextrous--at least in my understanding. No one side seems dominant and you just got used to using different hands for different operations.

I think whatever hand you write with determines which is your dominate hand.

Peace.
