If Renault hadn't publicly announced in the middle of the 2006 season, that they would not be racing in 2007 (and of course then they change their minds), Alonso would have probably stayed there.
That's the problem with Renault, they never know how long they will stay committed to racing. They've been in and out of F1 a few times. That plays hob with a driver's career.
Fred helped to develop Renault into two WCC's, and there's no reason why he couldn't do it again. He's an excellent development driver.

I expected him to return to Renault all along. BEcause he'd want to be in one of the front-row teams and not midfield. Plus, he'd choose a team that are willing to pay the high salary he receives at McLAren.
Toyota would fulfill the second condition but not the first. ANd it matters a lot to ALonso to be in a winning team. Red Bull was also another option. He also mentioned that Renault was not his first choice. And let's not forget that he only wanted a year's contract as he could possibly be going to Ferrari.
However, as time passed, more and more teams annouced their official line up for next year. His options decreased and since he really wanted a race seat for next year, he took up Renault's offer and was reunited with Flavio. But what I didn't count on was him partnering Piquet Jr instead of Heikki.

I think both he and Renault are desperate. Alonso, especially because after all that he'd gone through this year, having a rookie outdo him (I bet he didn't see that coming) and he didn't want to sign on for two years. But in the end, he agreed with Renault's terms although that was not initially what he wanted.
As for Renault, they've been struggling for speed all year. I personally find it surprising that they chose to drop Heikki and in doing so, indirectly opening a path for McLaren to have another good driver in the team.
Besides, many other teams had already confirmed their driver line-ups for next year, so it's not surprising that Alonso chose Renault despite saying that was not his 'first option'. He wants to win his third title and beat Lewis (and others as well).

I'm sure a lot of folks at McLaren hold him partly responsible for their mess and so he's best gone from there. Renault was his best option of what little was available. Can he and his mechanic extract the best from them again, not likely this coming season, maybe the next. Watch for BWM to challenge Ferrari and McLaren at the top. I think with the apology from McLaren being accepted they are now in a better position going into 08.

the little spanish git needs to go back to where he belongs and make way for better drivers back at mclaren. Alonso is a good driver and everything.. but what use is a driver that good thats not winning races?
he wasnt any use back at mclaren once they discovered they had a new #1 driver in Hamilton, they need a cheaper, younger driver that they can develop and that wont mind being a #2 driver.

They released hekki and put him right into the hands of a rival but alonso is totally worth it for a team like renault who need a great driver and someone who can help develop their car further.

With the turmoil at McLaren and the controversy surrounding the two drivers last season, something had to give.....and - luckily, for his career - he was able to get out of a mess that may make 2008 quite a struggle.

given the fact that he was never gonna get back his numero uno status back in mclaren after a matching performance by rookie Hamilton n soured relations with team management, Fernando would be better off in any other team even if it be Aguri or Midland.
im sure that he is glad to be out of mclaren n back in Renault with whom he has two titles.
