In Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) the Supreme Court held that a person who is forced to represent himself because he cannot afford to hire a lawyer does not get equal protection under the law, under the Sixth Amendment which states that the accused has the right to "have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense."
