In a practical sense, the government could no longer afford to pay the state owned industries enough money to keep people employed, so they privatized. Nor could the state have enough money for anything else, so the state owned farms went as well.
Most of the assets were sold to a small class of Russians many of whom were politburo types.
Politically, the Soviet Union could no longer afford to keep it's Eastern European satellites or even Cuba supplied with enough security or aid to keep them from collapsing as well.
There were powerful anti-Soviet feelings built up over years of political oppression and corruption.
Economically, there was a failure to innovate. The command economy did not reward innovation and risk taking. It did reward science through education, but not risk taking. So, current technologies were able to be enhanced and replicated, but they could not keep up with modern technology.
Militarily, they could not afford to defend themselves from the US and plus all the people the US supported to fight them, like Bin Laden. Ironies, ironies.

The short answer is: Russia was getting its butt kicked by Germany in World War I. This led to a huge number of Russian deaths, and also led to major economic problems throughout the country. There were food shortages and the people started to riot. They lost confidence in the Czar, Nicholas II, and he abdicated (gave up power). While this was happening, the Russian communists (called Bolsheviks) organized a takeover of the government. Not everyone supported the Bolsheviks, so the result was the Russian Civil War (one of the bloodiest civil wars in history!). The Communists, led by Lenin, won the civil war, took control of the country, and established the Soviet Union.
