Believe it or not, they were fighting for THE RIGHTS OF ENGLISHMEN. (The Englishmen in question being themselves.) They believed that the "English Constitution" applied to them even though the lived across the sea, as Tom Pain points out on the first page of his "Common Sense." And they would not allow themselves to be treated as second class "subjects" of the King (as were the Irish and some others). They were Englishmen, by God, and wouldn't stand for it!

Independence from Britain and King George. Self government.

They were fighting mostly about money, in the form of tariffs and taxes. In order to control their own economic futures and prosperities, freedom from the rule of George III needed to be established.

Fighting for independence from Britain. They also didn't get a say in any politics about them.
