I removed the RAM stick. The number on it read:
761133839362

DDR 512 mb PC 2700

HTL XE 1026

I am planning to buy the RAM online, but I have no idea what to select. Can someone tell me exactly what the RAM description should say? I need 512 mb or 1GB

your type of ram is PC 2700 they don't sell this very many places anymore. You can still buy PC 3200 it is backward compatible to that model of ram. Assuming its 184 pin DIMM.

If you knew the motherboard model and maker I could better answer this question.

You could also take the ram you have removed to a local computer vendor and they would be able to give you an appropriate replacement.

What made remove the ram? as for 512 or 1GB, if the motherboard doesn't support bigger RAM chips a 1GB won't work.

PLEASE ADD MORE DETAIL.

The existing memory helps but the better option is to get the motherboard information. You should be able to find DDR PC2700 memory (either another 512 MB or even a 1 GB stick) to use but you are taking a bit of a chance on the CAS/latency (not a great risk, but possible). If you have the motherboard info, most computer website memory "wizards" should have an option that will find the "best" memory for your system.

Open up your computer again, get the make and model number of the motherboard (the largest circuit board), then use the free Crucial Memory Advisor™ Tool
