Some of the amniotic fluid in a baby's lungs is squeezed out into the upper portion of the respiratory tract as the baby is pushed down the birth canal. It is then suctioned out by the doctor or nurse when the baby's head emerges. Extra oxygen may be given to help dry out any excess fluid but the baby's lymphatic system (the system responsible for maintaining fluid balance) will also work to rid the fluid from the lungs.
