Tancredo dropped out of the race and endorsed Romney today, saying he's the best remaining candidate on illegal immigration.

Tancredo is of course a one-issue candidate, that issue being stopping illegal immigration. Tancredo is also the least popular Republican candidate in the polls.

Will having a hard-line anti-illegal immigration endorsement help Romney? Or will it hurt him to have the endorsement of such an unpopular candidate?

And why is Tancredo endorsing Romney as the best candidate on illegal immigration when until very recently, Romney employed illegal immigrants at his home?

It will help.

Polling shows that illegal immigration is one of the top three issues in almost every early voting state. Tom Tancredo has been a hardliner, harder than any other candidate, on the issue. No one expects Mitt Romney to be nearly as hawkish; but if someone like Tancredo trusts Romney to take care of things, then it gives him credibility with people who give this the highest priority.

As for the illegals who worked on his property, those were not hired by Romney. They were hired by the company he employed. When you go to the gas station, do you ask the latino cashier if he's in the country legally? He gave the contractor a second chance, and when the contractor failed to hire only legal citizens, Romney fired him.

Tom Tancredo knows this, and he still endorses Governor Romney as an "honorable" man. That should be enough for anyone who trusts Tancredo's judgment and was willing to vote for him.

The Tancredo endorsement helps Romney because it is free positive press, unless Romney bought Tancredo's endorsement.
