No.

Wild rodents carry some VERY dangerous diseases.

Rabies
The Plague (aka Black Death. It's been found in rural parts of the Pacific Northwest)
Hanta Virus
Various other bacteria
Bites can cause Tetnus (they don't carry it)
Just to name a few.
As well as assorted mites, fleas and other bugs.

They, like all wildlife, belong far away from humans.

Maybe your real question isn't neccesarily what kind, but what type. For example, in hamsters not all of them are the same. You have different breeds, sizes, personalities etc. Same with rats, mice, guinnea pigs etc. I can tell you right now that if you dont want a pet that stinks, and can live in a small cage get a dwarf breed of hamster. They are very quiet and dont ussually tend to smell the place up. (i help my frend breed them) Now, in the dwarf breeds there are several different types. You have your chinese dwarf, russian dwarf, campells dwarf, syrian dwarf, jungarian dwarf, and so on. Jungarian (spelling not right) hamsters tend to stay fat and cuddly, while chinese dwarfs tend to be fiesty lil devils(not mean but feisty), and then there is the russian dwarf breed. This breed allows for the most color and personality variety. Not all of them are ever the same. You can get some with spots, stripes, or just solids. Some are lazy while others need to cut back on the caffeine. And then there are the miniatures. The most common breed of miniatures is the "robo". They stay even smaller than dwarfs, but cannot be kept in bared cages. They need either glass or plastic so they don't get out. All day and all night these things go and go and go and never get tired. Just one is funny, but two are hillarious. If you get what I am saying, then I will let you do a little more research and make a more informed decision. As for me, I help breed russian dwarfs and know them best. If you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask. Hope this helps.

no! First, I wouldn't keep a rat or a mouse as a pet in the first place. Second, its wild so no no no, thats horrible to the mouse/rat and they would be a horrible pet.

No although I wouldn't kill it either. I am a big softy when it comes to animals, all sorts. My stray cat would probably eat it anyway.
