2. Diversity of culture--all kinds of wonderful ethnic restaurants, for instance.
3. Open space--at least here in the SF area. We have 7 million people but you can get in the car and be in the woods in 20 minutes.
4. Diversity of geography. For a weekend getaway you can go to the coast, the mountains, the desert, the Wine Country, the Gold Country, redwood forest, etc. etc.etc.

Okay so I'll just assume that by California you mean the Bay Area, because that's the best part of California. Here's some advantages to living in the Yay:
10. rampant liberalism (totally subjective)
9, delicious food
8, silicon valley
7, Close enough to: Santa Cruz, Tahoe, Yosemite, Hawaii,
6, me
5, close to the beach
4, Mac Dre (rip)
3, great weather about 11 months a year
2, we got grapes!
1, the Hyphy Movement (if you don't know what this is, go to SoCal)

My three main reasons would be
(1) many entertainment outlets
(2) many choices with schools
(3) weather's good.
You just have to filter out the materialistic people
and deal with the bad house market/economy...

Seeing famous people, the food, the warm weather year around (depends on which part you move), A lot of clubs and parties if you do that kind of thing, meeting new people.
