According to the multiple intelligences theory, I think the athletes IQ can be higher or lower than a non-athlete. This is because a non-athlete can be extremely intelligent in logistical and aptitude intelligences. But I think that being an athlete requires a completely different kind of intelligence than a a non-athlete because athletes have to have Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence to be better at what they do.

If you listen to the sports news on TV you would hear enough interviews with those professional athletes to convince you that the answer is much, much lower. They can't put a coherent thought together and that if they did they would phrase it really poorly. No matter what education they claim they can not express themselves better than a sixth grader who is half their age.

I would guess that it would be lower because athletes are more likely to have taken blows to the head causing brain damage.

it really depends. usually when i hear interviews the athlete sounds very smart and well educated, on rare occasions you'll get the guy that isn't well spoken or educated.
for example from my home town phoenix suns we've got alot of smart guys: steve nash, amare stoudemire, grant hill, raja bell, brian skinner, etc.
but we've also got Shawn Marion who isnt really great at the talking, but i dont think it means he's dumb.
but all the other guys on the list sound very smart and you know what, they are.

Probably there's a cross section of abilities, just like with most other professions (apart from rocket scientists!)
