I would like to hear from people who have LIVED in South Africa- your opinion on the 3 cities- Cape Town, Joburg or Pretoria? Which is safest for single woman? What about best universities? Not interested in clubbing- way past that. Thanks!!

Although I live in Joburg, and Joburg is the main hub of Africa, Cape Town, but especially Steenbosh, would be the safer and nicer choice for a single female. There is so much to do for students as the whole town is like a student village. It is also a few minutes drive away from Cape Town which is ofcourse one of the major cities in South Africa.

Cape town. I live in Joburg - believe me - go to Cape town and enroll at the University of Cape town. They are one of the best in the World and ur degree will mean something.

As far as crime is concerned, ur not really safe anywhere and it gets worse all the time. There is not a person in my family or that I know who has not been directly effected by violent crime. My advise is to stay with other students and check SA out before u enroll or come here as a student.

If I were you I would opt for Cape Town. Joburg is way too full of crime. I'm serious, check out the statistics. Cape Town is beautiful, much safer and much more relaxed than the other too. You might wanna choose between UCT and Stellenbosch. UCT is in the city, and Stellenbosch is like a student village with a very nice feel. UCT is more English and Stellenbosch more Afrikaans, but you can study in English there too. UCT and Stellenbosch are both renowned universities well respected in SA.

I would go for Cape Town. Darth Vader has already mentioned that in Cape Town and the surrounding areas there is so much to do if one is not interested in clubbing. And aesthetically, Cape Town is the most beautiful city, with the ocean almost all around the city, Table Mountain, Signal Hill and Lions head in the centre of the city. And the surrounding areas are, to a large degree, wine lands, beautifully combining city, towns, landscape and nature with mountains in between. There are so many sports clubs which one could join, mountaineering, canoeing, parachuting, surfing, yachting and many, many more.

Here´s a link to just one site about Cape Town:

Cape Town is the most beautiful and Pretoria probably the 'safest' but use Google for statistics on the universities and crime statistics

I would prefer Cape Town. There are far nicer things to do in your free time that does not include clubbing.

Joburg. But be warned... It can be a very dangerous place (to be fair, that applies to the rest of SA as well).

Google "South Africa Crime Statistics".
I've got South African friends who moved here (CA) 8 years ago from Durban, and they told me crime is absolutely rampant because of the high unemployment rate. They lived in a compound with 10" walls and razor wire in an affluent neighborhood. They couldn't take a walk in the neighborhood, even during the day.
I'd rethink my plan if I was you.
