If you are not in the wedding party, you go by a couple of things when deciding what to wear.
What time of day is the wedding? Evening weddings are traditionally more formal than afternoon weddings. For men, a sport coat, slacks, dress shirt, and tie might work at an afternoon church wedding, whereas a nice suit would be better for an evening wedding. For women, something in the range of Sunday best to modest after-five attire would be the right answer. The big no-no color is white, that is reserved for the bride. It used to be that black was not a wedding guest color either, but that has changed over the years and now is acceptable and even fashionable in some areas. If you know the wedding colors, you should try to complement them, while avoid either "matching" them or clashing with them. You don't want to appear as if you are trying to be part of the wedding party, nor would you want to stick out too much in candid group photos. This probably means finding a color and style that is somewhat in keeping with the season. You also shouldn't wear something extremely tight, bare, or revealing to a wedding--no plunging necklines or slits to the waist. Some cathedrals and chapels have requirements for head coverings or wraps, so you might want to try and check on that with someone in the know beforehand.
If the wedding is outside, you need to put a bit more thought into it to plan for the weather conditions, seating, and even the heel type and height for walking to and from the parking to the ceremony. Stiletto heels are probably not the best choice because you might sink in the sod, and would be more likely to trip over roots, rocks, or other outdoor hazards.
Dress comfortably for the weather, but modesty should still prevail. Outdoor weddings are usually more casual, and depending on the location or theme may suggest a style--Hawaiian floral prints for a beach wedding, etc.
Hope that helps!!

Wedding guest style for her
Informal Daytime: Short dress or suit (business attire OK for morning weddings)
Informal Evening: Cocktail dress
Semi-Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit
Semi-formal Evening: Cocktail dress
Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit. Hats and gloves optional.
Formal Evening or Black-Tie: Long or dressy short cocktail (beading, glam accessories, wrap)
Ultra-formal or White Tie: Long gown, extra glitz (furs, diamonds, etc.)
Do's and Don'ts for Her
Don't wear white because it competes with the bride. There are plenty of other colors available.
Don't wear black or sequins during the daytime.
Don't worry about wearing the same colors as the bridesmaids or mothers. You can't possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party.
Do wear something feminine and appropriate, out of respect for your hosts.

Clubwear, overtly sexy clothing (strapless, see-through, etc) doesn't belong at a wedding. If you have to ask if it's appropriate, it probably isn't.
Don't wear opera-length gloves (to top of arm) with anything but sleeveless or strapless gowns.
Do take off gloves to eat or drink.
Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn't specify the formality of the event. A pastel suit or soft floral dress for daytime or a little black dress for evening (after 6 p.m.) will take you almost anywhere.
Wedding Style for him
Informal Daytime: Dress shirt and pants, preferably a sports jacket.
Informal Evening: Suit
Semi-Formal Daytime: Suit
Semi-Formal Evening: Dark suit
Formal Daytime: Dark suit and tie
Formal Evening: Tuxedo (if invitation states "black tie") or dark suits if women wear short dresses.
Ultra-formal Evening or White Tie: White tie, cummerbund, vest and shirt.
Do's and Don'ts for Him
Don't try to get cute with a tuxedo. A black tux with white shirt and black bow tie is the best way to go. If "Creative Black Tie" or "Texas Formal" or some sort of other vague formal description is used, then going with a tux and black shirt, no tie, might be acceptable. Also, trendier cities like Los Angeles and New York might be more accepting of breaking with tradition.
Do wear a dark suit, with a tie if the wedding is after 6 PM, and doesn't say "Black Tie."
Don't wear a tuxedo during the day time, regardless of the formality of the event.
Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn't specify the formality of the event. A dark suit and conservative tie will take you just about anywhere.

Anything but white. It is considered rude to wear white to a wedding because its upstages the bride. Wear dress apparel can be a dress or trousers, just look nice, be comfortable and have fun!

i assume you are asking this because you aren't sure what to wear...if you are attending a wedding, keep in mind that everyone's focus is on the bride....so don't dress like your trying to "upstage" her.....(no short skirts, low cut blouses, and above all, do not wear a red dress. avoid elaborate hairstyles and large amounts of makeup.) dress "nice"....unless the bride is a 20-something year old and she doesn't mind if you wear jeans.....lol

Something light colored (nothing black, black's more for a funeral) and at least semi formal. No jeans, but if you don't want to wear a dress some nice khakis and a dressy shirt would be fine.

depends on the wedding, and the culture.
The weddings I have gone to, or been invited to were Christian weddings, where formal attire was the norm and I wore a suit.

nothing too too fancy.
if your not all that girly, you could wear nice black pants and a cute shirt (like a nice flowy - ish one)
or wear a nice dress.
something like in Charlotte Russe and Forever 21.
nothing prom-like, but dressed up enough.
