My newborn loves to lay on his back and look around. But he throws up every time he is on his back. If I keep him on his back, he keeps throwing up. He doesn't do this while sitting up. The hardest thing is that I am breast feeding so I don't have an unlimited supply of food for him if he throws up too much. I even have to lay him to sleep on his side because he vomits all night if I don't. Why does this happen and how can I stop it???

This sounds like typical reflux to me. Keep your baby at a 45 degree angle (about as high as a pillow) for 30 minutes after you've fed him. Dress and play with him in this position if you can.

Also make sure you burp him every 15 minutes as 'trapped' wind can cause them to spit up.

You may also want to check with his pediatrician. If reflux gets out of control a baby can start to lose weight (as my son did). It's easy to treat though.

Another thing, sometimes it looks like they're throwing up a whole lot, but they're not. BM babies can overeat when they comfort nurse, and what we see come out is the 'excess' milk.

Still, it's not a bad idea to take him to the ped. just to make sure everything's working as it should.

Don't worry, as long as your son keeps nursing your breasts will keep making milk. I sometimes pump, and 10 minutes later my son wants to eat... there's milk every time.

Do consult your baby's health visitor (if in the UK) or whoever you would normally see for him.

In the meantime, have you tried raising the head-end of his cot when he's in that. As long as you put him to be feet-to-foot of bed, and its only a slight incline he shouldn't slide down.

When he's not in bed, use a bouncy-seat/rocker chair for him, so he's not sitting up, but he's not lying flat either.

Wind him part way through his feeds and allow him at least 10 minutes after a full feed to be upright so that it has a chance to get down and past his stomach and on into his digestive system.

If this has always been the case with your son, there may be a possibility of an anatomical anomaly. The valve above the stomach may be "incompetent" and simply not strong enough to keep the feed retained in the stomach. This would be very unlikely. The hospital would not have let him home with you if he had serious feeding problems, so I doubt its this.

My son did the SAME thing. It sounds as though he has reflux.
Did you burp him enough?Iknow it sounds weird to hear enough but some babies require more burping then others. my son needed to be burped 3x!!!
Also try to get a wedge for his crib. so it lays him in an angle.
try sitting him up for 15-30 mins after he eats.
I know how you feel. I use to get soo nervous because 2 hours after he ate hed just go to town throwing up. Id get scared to put him to sleep thinking hes choke on it.
Talk to you doctor about it def.
Dont let him keep going onlike this. He could be in pain.
My son is 3 monthes old and he still has a prob with it. Not as bad as it was but its still bad. Hes on Zantac too.We even had to swich his formula 4 times.. But def call.

it sounds like reflux. spitting up hours after eating is one sign. being upright seems to stop the spitup right? that is another sign of reflux because being upright helps.

i too had this problem when my baby was newborn. i layed him on his side to sleep as well. i took him to the dr. for his 2 week appt and they said he had reflux problems. we switched his formula and gave him prevacid and he has been fine since.

take the baby to the dr. and ask about it.

My granddaughter had something similar. It was reflux due to an underdeveloped hiatial sphincter (the muscle that closes the espophogus from the stomach.

She had to take antacid type medicine until she was 4.

Go see your pediatrician ASAP.

Are you burping the baby? You need to make sure and burp the baby or the air and gas will cause spitup and vomiting. If this doesn't hel, you need to go to the doctor.

Take him to the doctor and see what is going on because that does not sound good at all.

I put one of my pillows under his mattress so it would prop the mattress up a little... (but not too much) this helped my son with that problem...
