Actually, you really don't need "disinfectants". Most of what we come across in daily life are "good" germs and only small doses of "bad" germs. Those small doses make our immune system stronger and help us fight off stuff like the flu and common cold.

A great scrubbing cleanser can be made with 1/3 borax (found on the laundry aisle) and 2/3 baking soda. I use an old Parmesan cheese shaker to mix them and apply the powder to surfaces. Just wet it like you would Ajax cleanser and scrub. Things come clean easily and smell fresh.

Cleaning toilets can be simple as well. You can pour some cleanser down into the bowl and use a toilet brush or you can use vinegar added to the bowl water to clean it. Both are good at getting rid of odors.

I have a professional steam cleaner, which can spray hot steam on any non-porous surface to get it clean and "sanitized". So I use it on kitchen counter tops, all sinks, the toilet and tile floors. If you find you'd rather use steam and want to switch to a steam cleaner for your whole house, I'd recommend a professional one. (I have the one made by Shark. I purchased it at Target a few years ago.) If you want to use steam to spot clean sinks and counter tops, all you'd need is a regular steam cleaner. Scunci makes a popular one and so does Shark. My mom has the Scunci steamer. It's great for getting off grime, food residue, and hard water marks and soap scum. I even use it to clean up crayon marks (I have a three year old), spots on my carpet, and my car's upholstery. It really freshens better than chemicals.

Vinegar is just as effective as bleach for disinfecting but completely safe. It does have a strong smell, but you can leave your windows open when you use it and the smell dissipates quickly. Vinegar is fantastic for lots of cleaning needs - great for glass surfaces, floors, mold in tile grout, and kitchen & bathroom counters/surfaces. Also good for quickly disinfecting the toilet between cleanings, and getting the mildew smell out of laundry.

Some other natural and safe disinfectants are lemon juice, lavender oil, and tea tree oil. Baking soda is a great substitute for Soft Scrub/Clorox powder, as it's mildly abrasive. It's also good for deodorizing fabrics, the fridge, trash, and stained, smelly tupperware. See the link below for more safe cleaning tips.

The other poster was partially right about how many people feel the need to disinfect things when in reality there are many types of bacteria that are benign or even good for us. The places in our homes that we do need to be concerned about bacteria are in the bathroom and kitchen - that's where most of the harmful bacteria hang out.

The best cleaner is Hot soapy water. Nothing fancy needed. If you clean regularly, you don't have to worry about disinfectant.
