I'm travelling to Montreal between Christmas and New Years and would love some advice about what I shouldn't miss while there. We'll be there 4 days.

Thanks!

Jeez, I love people who make no effort to find out about places they're travelling, and then say they're 'boring'. If you couldn't find anything to do in Montreal in the summer, you had to have been TRYING to be bored - we're the destination in Canada for festivals and events in the summer!

I agree with the last poster - museums are great for this weather, and we have some good ones. The Contemporary arts museum is always good if you like that sort of thing, but we have many beautiful private galleries (such as the Candian Guild of Crafts on Sherbrooke with a fascinating history - it sells Inuit & Aboriginal art).

Beaver lake is beautiful, as is the lookout over the city if you continue up the mountain from the lake - you can buy a hot chocolate and see the incredible beautiful chalet that sits on the huge stone balcony overlooking the city. Apparently there's real food now there too! Not just drinks & snacks anymore... it's a gorgeous building with all stone floors and walls, huge windows... they used to have balls there all the time.

Other than that we have great indoor shopping downtown, with an underground 'city' that connects at least 4 shopping centres if my count is correct. There are amazing boutiques all along Saint Laurent street, if you can brave the weather dodging in and out of them!

Honestly I don't think you can go wrong downtown - shopping, eating, seeing the beautiful Christmas lights ... the weather might make you cringe but if you dress up warmly enough you can do it.

I have to reccommend Reubens on Saint Catherine for eating... there are two: NOT the small one that looks like a greasy spoon - the big one at 1116 Saint Catherine Street. It's classy but not stuffy, with great music and amazing service... the food speaks for itself & they have a great selection of wines & martinis. It's a great place to go after shopping or tramping around all day - big comfy booths & big plates ;)

Enjoy your trip! Check out the Montreal tourism website for more details.

There's so much to do in Montreal and theres been a lot of good suggestions so far. If you ever need any information while your in Montreal, you can always stop by the Tourist Information centre (its in the heart of downtown) 1255 Peel Street, or phone them up before you leave (its free from Canadian/US land lines) at 1-877-BONJOUR. The call centre is located in Montreal and they have a ton of information on year-round/winter attractions and activities as well as special events that will be happening when you're there.

I've rarely agreed with Lolita's needlessly rude comments, but yeah, roller coasters and parkas don't mix!

Skate on Beaver Lake (or at the Old Port)
Eat at Schwartzes
Enjoy the comforts of the Underground City (is it ever still called that?)
Check out the Oratory
Might be a good time of year for museums, does get a bit chilly!
