I generally ignore them. People who need to do that have, in fact, no self esteem themselves. How I see it is that they need to be ignored so they have time to think about what they just said, process it all, and then, hopefully they realize the real reasons why they are being jerks. I figure when people do something dumb they had a bad day, bad week, bad month or bad year.

I ignore them if they are trying to tear down my self-esteem. I try to counter them if they are attacking another person that I can help.

I don't particularly like them, but also recognize that they are responding to unmet needs of their own and try to respect that without approving.

I have known people I started out not liking who changed and I wound up liking them. Sometimes folks just outgrow whatever obnoxiosity they may have acquired in the course of their misdevelopment.

(I have used two words Yahoo doesn't like. If you can find them give yourself a pat on the back and be proud of the self-esteem you have thusly gained.)

People like that are projecting their own insecurities and self esteem issues unto you in an attempt to make themselves feel better. The best thing to do is to ignore them and not give them the attention their negative comments are trying to illicit.

They are completley pathetic, how dare they pull and tear a human being down. the best advise i would give to someone who was going through this is to ignore the people, hold ur head high, and belive that u are better than them.
Why put a human being through the horror they do, because they have nothing better to do in their lives, jelousy maybe!?
Generally people who do this have something missing in their lives and make someone feel so down to big their selfs up its awful!

The best thing to do is ignore them and let them know they are being ignored. People like that are compensating for their own lack of self esteem

Obviously, I don't have a very high opinion of them. I just remind myself that their opinions really don't signify at the end of the day because who are they? In instances where they actually do signify (like my boss's wife hates me with a passion for absolutely no reason and is always making comments), I just remind myself that she's a miserable, old cow and forget about it.

Excellent question.

Those people are bullies. They have an inferiority complex, so they are always trying to say "See- I am a lot better than you!"

I have an old friend like that. He is a good guy, but he is an obnoxious @sshole, too.

Don't think much of people like that at all.

I just tend to ignore them or make a sarcastic comment if it's aimed at me.

I have no respect for people like that. None whatsoever. And unless I have to deal with them on a daily basis, I wouldn't deal with them at all.

if your self-esteem is intact, no one can tear it down. that's what self-esteem is about.
