I remember my brothers being in one in the late 70's, though it wasn't a requirement. It certainly didn't have to be buckled in. Because we were in an accident in 78 which sent my baby bro flying @ 6 weeks. Car seat went one way he went the other. We were all thrown from the vehicle. He landed face first in the dirt right next to the pavement. Nothing but a tiny scratch on him. Xrays, everything came back good. Though the accident wasn't our fault, the driver now a days would be sighted for violations like that. The driver of our vehicle wasn't sighted. But then again neither was the drunk driver that hit us....my how times have changed. I don't know how we survived that roll over? some of us w/out injuries and some with some major, but none life threatening.

I think the law went into effect sometime in the early 80's. Best Wishes!

I had my son in the mid 80's (84) and you had to have a car seat to leave the hospital but they weren't real strict like they are today.
