in science, praying would be insignificant.
in psychology, praying would be helpful if you feel guilty in your thoughts. nonetheless, the ultimate end should for the preservation of your ego.
now, you can choose.

Yes, I ask God to forgive me when I think of swear words.
I hang with an assorted group of college students and some of them swear as if it's the best word game in the world. Not until I began making it a daily routine to at least have lunch with them, did my mind begin to be consumed with profanity. I still want to be with them because, other than that, they are studious individuals and good for analyzing your homework. I do not swear out loud (maybe 20 times in my life), and before this, those words were more like Freudian Slips than something I thought about. But I see the problem, I know it's sinful, and I accept my sin for now. Yet, I ask God to help me make the transition from a sinful lifestyle, and one day with God's help, I'll change.
Although, I don't think of swear words that often, so it's not like I'm apologizing constantly. If you have a obsession with it, then it might start to slip out, and that would make you look bad if you are in a professional setting. Then I suggest you take action and take time to apologize to yourself too, because that's a form of therapy to get yourself to stop swearing. If you don't want to pray, then keep praying and eventually the thoughts will lessen.

It sounds as if you are looking for peace of mind, and for someone to tell you everything is ok. So.. Why ask us? Can any person on Yahoo Answers actually tell you just the right thing to ease your troubled spirit?
If you are feeling guilty or uncomfortable about your thoughts, it may be healthy to pray. That seems to be what you need or else you wouldn't be troubled enough to ask in the first place.
If "prayer" is a word you don't like, try meditating on positive and loving thoughts, and practice the art of wishing your enemies well. If you don't want to do it for your enemies, do it for you. Your peace of mind is worth it, and over time you will find your heart changing as well.

Yes, You must pray for forgiveness.. and also to curtail the thoughts. If you do not want to pray it won't work anyway ..because it's not from the heart. The Bible says if you have a sinful thought you have already committed the sin.

if you're talking about Christianity then all you have to do is pray once and act out the rest. as in u may repent with your mouth but you have to act on it. you cant say im sorry and keep doing the same thing. and as far as not wanting to pray then sorry to say you're screwed. aint no other way.

I'm a deist.. but in my study of religions to find my peace of mind I found that it is the belief of many (and there seems to be support for this in the Bible (assuming you are Christian)) that we are not judged for our thoughts, merely our actions. With the only exception being "Coveting your neighbors wife"

If the thoughts are worrying you, try writing them down, that way you can help get them out of your head. God knows your intent and you don't have to be forgiven if you haven't done anything wrong.

OCD, eh? Me too- but not of religious images or thoughts. Phobias of germs, etc.
You don't have to pray if you don't want to- but, my dear friend, what harm could possibly come from it?
I encourage you to pray.
God can help you combat the OCD. He is helping me!
