Hi Jess
To figure out for sure what that bump is you better get an experts opinion who has actually seen the horse, it could be anything or nothing, it's always a problem to make a diagnose over the computer, so take the advice others already gave you, have the vet or a farrier look at it and don't try to fix something yourself you don't know what it might be.

how about ringing up a localish vet - they will know of other vets in the area you are looking for.

I wouldnt recommend dealing with the problem with your horses hoof, only when you are 100% sure you know what it is can you take the appropriate action. the only time you should break the skin is if there is a big infection and you need to clear it.

If the area is sensitive to the touch then call the vet, if not maybe ring your farrier and ask him to look at it (or ask him over the phone) they will be pretty knowledgable as they see all sorts of stuff every day.

You need to bring your vet and farrier to check the horse out. Combined together they will be able to tell you what exactly is going on with the horse. If I ever have a hoof problem that is normally what I do that way they can compare what they think and come up with the best plan for my horse.

Have a farrier check him out. They know horses hoofs and could tell you what is wrong. could it be a stone bruise?

Do you know how to recognize an abscess? Is he in pain? As far as a vet, the phone book would be your best bet. Not the safest, but it would give you a name. I would call other barns in your area to get a name or two.

File the lump of with a medium rasp, hold his leg firmly, it may bleed but keep going, the farrier would probably burn it off, thus creating more pain for the horse and a bill for you

It is probably just a growth. BUT it could have cancer or another disease so I would definitely try and get help. I CANT FIND ANYWHERE EITHER!
